How to Keep Your WebSite Current

Think back to when you first launched your website. You were so proud to have it up and now what is your site doing for you? Has it been a year or more since you've done anything on your site? Here are some things you can do to keep your website current.

1. Review Your Website

Take a look around. What do you see? Has your target audience changed since the initial web design? Taking a look at your site through the eyes of your target audience is helpful. You might discover items that are annoying and cause your visitors to leave. Grab a friend or co-worker. Ask what they see when they visit your site.

Take note of the things you'd like to change and see which ones you can tackle yourself. If you have a CMS (content management system) or a web template you can manage, most changes you want done, you will be able to handle yourself without having to contact a web developer.

2. Update Content

This may sound very trivial, but updating your web content can help immensely when refreshing your website. Not only can it help boost your rankings on a search engine, it can also show your customers you are still around and have new things to share. Content can take the form of text, images, slides, or video.

When reviewing your content, make sure you are thinking about which keywords you are targeting. The keywords that were relevant when you first launched your site, may not be relevant now. There are many free tools like Google's Keyword Planner in AdWords and Ubersuggest

3. Blog

We're not trying to sound like a broken record here, but having a blog on your site these days is just as important as having your contact information listed. Google and other search engines are constantly crawling your site for new information and relevant content for their customers. A blog is one way to keep information flowing and is a good practice to let your audience know what you are doing.

A blog can take many shapes:

1. Use a blog to share press releases and news updates from your business.

2. Write how-to articles related to your products or service.

3. Share information on trends and news from your industry.

4. Add Social Media Feeds

If you're active on social media, share that information on your site! This is one way to show your visitors to your site that you are active. Embedding a social feed is free and easy-to-do. Many platforms like Facebook and Twitter have developer sites with the HTML code you need.

5. Utilize Video

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, a video is worth 10 times more than a picture. Videos are great pieces of content to utilize on your site. You can use videos to give people an inside look at your organization and what it's like to work with you. Like a blog, you can use a video to demonstrate how to use your product or give advice on a topic in your industry. Unless you're the next Steven Spielberg, keep your videos between 1-2 minutes long, otherwise you might lose the attention of your audience fast.

There are obviously more ways to keep your website current, but these are a few easy tasks to keep your site competing with the rest.
