Hello! My name is Madi Monahan, and I’m one of the new summer interns at 5j Design. I grew up about twenty minutes away in Hartford, and will be a senior at Morningside College in Sioux City this fall. I am an English major, and along the way I added Advertising and General Psychology minors. My areas of expertise are writing, editing, marketing, and a little bit of design. At Morningside, I give tours to prospective students as a Student Ambassador, and hold an officer position for a few groups on campus. I just recently returned from a trip to London - very expensive but a long-awaited dream come true!

Because I know you're absolutely DYING to know more about me, I've included, for your reading pleasure, my answers to ten random "get to know me" survey questions.

1) If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to speak any and every language. Traveling is a big passion of mine, and it’d be awesome to have no language barriers anywhere I went!

2) What’s your go-to midnight snack?

Cereal always tastes better at night than it does in the morning.

3) Favorite thing to do in Sioux Falls?

The Sidewalk Arts Festival in the fall, see shows at the Washington Pavilion and eat at the Phillips Avenue Diner.

4) What book are you currently reading?

I’m rereading one of my favorite series, the Clockwork series by Cassandra Clare. I try to read one “challenging book” and then a “mind candy book”, and then another “challenging book”, etc. I just finished Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

5) What are you most looking forward to about interning at 5j?

Gaining real knowledge about marketing and content writing, while working with the great team here.

6) It’s the weekend. What team are you watching on TV?

The Alabama Crimson Tide!

7) What’s your favorite holiday?

I love the fourth of July - it’s warm outside and everything great about summer culminates on one day. Everyone’s in a good and cheery mood, hot dogs are on the grill, we’re jet skiing on Lake Brandt where my family has a lake cabin. And of course the fireworks are always great.

8) What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

My dad always tells me to keep an open mind, think for myself, and form my own opinions. It’s something I think about everyday.

9) What’s your favorite color?

Yellow!

10) What’s your dream job?

I’d love to work in publishing someday - whether that means reading the slush pile of manuscripts, writing teasers for inside covers, promoting book launches with the marketing team or even working as a literary agent - anything with books and writing would make me happy.

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me! Keep checking back with the 5J website to see the blog posts I'll be writing throughout my time here.
